“This is war, not helmeted development”
“In war, truth is not a luxury. It is life saving.”
These are quotes taken from the latest article written in Die Zeit Online. The first speaks of the obvious truth that Germany is in fact at war in Afghanistan. The second speaks to how owning up to this truth will save German lives.
How Germany reacts to the truth that it is at war will determine its future in Afghanistan and possibly force America to make massive strategical adjustments on how it wages war in Afghanistan. The truth is not politically appetizing for the ruling government. Two-thirds of Germany is against their presence in Afghanistan. They will pay a political price if more flag covered coffins are sent home.
So their choice is this….either admit that Germany is at war, thus allowing Germany to provide the proper training and equipment to its troops, or continue living a lie and leave their soldiers in harm’s way.
One is politically easier than the other….the other speaks to the truth.
